slippages Immense Immensities
With slippages, I decided that one of the things I wanted to think about was scale - the landscapes are so vast! After my trip up to the Athabasca glacier and Columbia ice fields, I began thinking about how the scale of these kinds of landscapes could be represented. I often work out these preoccupations by painting or drawing. In this case, I chose to paint watercolour miniatures of the landscapes. I wondered if the way in which miniatures engage the viewer, by drawing you in close, then closer still, would be a way to communicate the enormous vistas that the ice fields presented, like the philosopher Gaston Bachelard's immense immensities in his book, The Poetics of Space.
