Seeds of Ideas...
Met with Sandeep today to review where Between the Song and the Silence is at. We discussed at some length the implications of staging, and how I intend to work out the timing and blocking. I am due to be working with a dramaturg who is very conversant in working with both amateurs and professionals to block out the piece. Also, I want to discuss with her the best way to script the blocking so that it’ll be clear for everyone. Right now, I should say that my notes look like a cross between a football playbook and free-form choreography notes! We discussed the different ways that directions can be done, including text. For the moment, I just need to chart the performers stage movements and timing. I have been working on a text version of the “conversation” between the two vocalists in the last act, The Feathered Cloaks of Poets. While the vocalists will be improvising using the bird calls, they need to emote and convey such things as inquiry, surprise, distress, sadness, etc. Providing them with a text script will more easily convey what it is they are supposed to emote, regardless of which birdcall they use. I’ll be meeting with Sandeep again to look over these diagrams and dialogue before he heads off to Berlin for a bit mid-November!
