A Ubiquity of Sparrows: New York, New York 2016; Banff Alberta, 2016
Project Summary: A Ubiquity of Sparrows
Considering what makes some species so successful, I noted the collective noun for a flock of sparrows, “a ubiquity”. Reflecting upon the environmental impact of species fluctuations, and of removing opportunistic species, led me to Mao Zedong’s deliberate eradication of the sparrow, a contributing factor in the self-inflicted environmental disaster, China’s famine. This installation will incorporate text from eyewitness interviews inscribed on small pieces of linen, forming each into a pouch containing the amount of feathers on a sparrow, tied along red silk cording. Hung densely, they will evoke a cloud. Wall text and 2D mixed-media works contribute alternate vantage points. |
